Tsasho is an artists’ handmade paper made from the inner bark or bast fibre of de-nar, a Bhutanese variety of lokta. De-nar has a darker tone and harder surface than both Nepalese lokta and mitsumata. It is a native plant of the Himalayan foothills found above 3000 metres. De-nar is a sustainable and renewable resource. Plants are cropped above ground level and can be reharvested after 3-4 years. The paper is made on a laid mould of split bamboo which gives a laid pattern to the sheet. The paper is couched and dried on a mud wall.
